THE WHAT
The San Diego Padres have stepped up to the plate to help the San Diego Unified School District raise awareness about the importance of regular school attendance amid a nationwide increase in absenteeism following the pandemic.

To help promote strong attendance, with an emphasis on elementary schools most impacted by absenteeism, the Padres have collaborated with San Diego Unified on a campaign that includes a public service announcement (PSA) and tickets to a Padres game as a reward for schools that improve attendance this spring.

THE WHO
The Padres will provide tickets to students, staff, and families at the school that increases attendance the most this spring, among the elementary schools most impacted by absenteeism. Meanwhile, elementary students at every school in San Diego Unified that improves attendance will have the opportunity to enter an opportunity drawing for tickets to a Padres game.

THE WHEN
San Diego Unified schools will share the PSA during the attendance contest throughout March and April. The results will be announced in May. Both the Padres and San Diego Unified are hopeful the attendance campaign will make a lasting impact and curb absenteeism going forward.

THE WHY
Research shows that missing 10 percent of kindergarten is associated with lower academic performance in first grade, especially among Latinx students, according to the nonprofit organization, Attendance Counts. For students from socioeconomically disadvantaged families, the academic impact of missing 10 percent of kindergarten can extend through fifth grade.

Since the pandemic, schools locally and nationwide have seen a spike in absenteeism. COVID-19 and other illnesses, mental health needs, housing and food insecurities, unmet transportation needs, and inflation, all contribute to chronic absenteeism.

San Diego Unified is committed to identifying the root causes of chronic absenteeism, and is working to implement solutions and strategies to support families so all students can regularly attend school and thrive.

The Padres have been longtime supporters of San Diego Unified and public education. The team stepped up with an offer to help when it became aware of the increase in absenteeism, especially at schools in areas that were hit hardest by the pandemic.

This is Mr. Lee with your Sunday message and updates for the week.  We had lots of fun this past week with our Slime event, Panther Buck lunch, Student Recognition, and celebrating Read Across America day with Spiderman and Ladybug girl coming to read for our students.  Photos and videos of our slime event will be shared once they are finished being complied.

Here's what is happening:

Attendance Matters

Be A Pro Always Go

THE WHAT
The San Diego Padres have stepped up to the plate to help the San Diego Unified School District raise awareness about the importance of regular school attendance amid a nationwide increase in absenteeism following the pandemic.

  • Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, students raised the Kumeyaay Band flag at district headquarters for the first time in a celebration that also featured bird singers, powwow dancers, and student speakers.

Native American Heritage Month celebrates the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and important contributions of Native people. Celebrating the month raises a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

The Kumeyaay were the original caretakers of the land where San Diego Unified schools and offices now reside. In addition to a Native American Heritage Month Board Resolution, the flag-raising is just one of many steps the district is taking this year to show solidarity with our Native American students and the larger Kumeyaay community.

My community and my people are still here, and I really want to acknowledge that, said Evette, a fifth grader at Mountain View UTK-8 School. Its amazing and makes me feel proud that with this flag raising we are going to be acknowledged by other people as well.

The flag itself is inspired by an elder from the Jamul tribe and approved by a committee of leaders of the regions 12 bands of Kumeyaay. The flag shows the tribal logos of each band, displayed in a circle.

Find educational resources in the districts Cultural Awareness Center and learn about future cultural events and opportunities with the districts Johnson OMalley Indian Education Program.

  • Reminder- BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS (from 23-24 Hage Student and Parent Handbook):
In an effort to promote a healthy learning environment and awareness of food allergies at Hage, please remember that we encourage parents to find alternate ways to celebrate their students birthday that do not involve food treats or candy.  We ask that you think about non-food items such as stickers, pencils, erasers, a book for the classroom, etc. We also encourage that birthday celebrations be recognized just before the end of the day. This allows the teaching staff to have a consistent time for all students that will not take up too much instructional time.
  • 2-5th grade students participated in a Circle up assembly took place on Friday.  Circling up with our students allows us to share important updates and reminders face to face.  Here are some of the talking points we discussed:
  1. The Hage Way- Treating others the way you would like to be treated.
  2. Leadership opportunities- inside and outside of the classroom.  This month we are focusing on the Leader in Me Habit: Being Proactive
  3. Having integrity- Doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
  4. Leading by example
  5. Welcoming all and no put downs
  6. Importance of safety around our campus
  7. Keeping our school clean

Please review these talking points with your student and ask them questions on how they can show these good habits.  Having common understanding and shared knowledge between home and school provides a winning combination for our students.
